How to Act

Depending on the way in which shop towels are handled, they may or may hazardous waste. If towels are handled as recommended below, they are not likely to be a hazardous waste.

  1.  Use cloth towels that can be cleaned and reused.
  2. Keep soiled shop towels in a closed container that is clearly marked “CONTAMINATED SHOP TOWELS ONLY.”
  3. Ask the laundry and/or recycler that services your shop if they discharge their waste water to the sanitary sewer system. Avoid using laundries and recyclers that discharge wastewater to a drain field.
  4. When possible, use less hazardous cleaning solvents (i.e., ones without chlorinated compounds).
